Options, when used effectively, can turn a non-dividend paying stock--often the case with small-caps—into one that pays you to hold onto shares. This strategy, known as the Buy-Write strategy, involves buying half the shares of a stock you’re willing to own, and writing, or selling, calls and puts against those shares.

Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) is a high flying growth stock that’s exploded from $50/share to over $400/share in less than three years. It’s eye-catching that a burrito restaurant is one of the few stocks trading that high. As a former collegiate swimmer, burritos were one of my staples. However, I usually opted for the $5 varieties instead of an $8 Chipotle monster. It added up when I was consuming a couple hundred burritos a year.

The market was on quite a run for the first quarter of 2012. Sabrient's list of top stocks for 2012, the Baker's Dozen, was up over +20% at one point this year. Following the recent market correction, this portfolio of 13 stocks is now up +7.74%. While significantly lower, its still not a bad number, especially when compared to its benchmark, the S&P 500, up nearly 3% this year. However, it really starts looking good when it's stacked up against top stock lists created by leading financial institutions.

Sabrient's own Daniel Sckolnik was quoted in an Institutional Investor article yesterday titled, Time to Buy VIX ETFs?.

One of Sabrient's 13 shorts in its Investor's Hedge Portfolio, Houston American Energy Corporation (HUSA), fell over -35% today on news that conditions at one of its major wells didn't allow for sufficient testing. As a result, the company says it will be forced to plug the well and evaluate other formations.

Sabrient shorted HUSA on January 27, 2012 at $12.75. It now trades at $6.88 giving us a +46% gain on our position!
