The usual suspects of Materials, Industrials, Financials and Energy continue to lead this unstable market both up and down. Most of my research and publishing tends to focus on companies manipulating accounting rules to make their reported earnings look better than the real economic cash flows of their business.
It is unfortunately rare that I find a company whose economic earnings are outpacing the reported accounting results and whose stock is cheap.

Investors dumped equities late last week ahead of the weekend – largely due to the tenuous situation with Greece’s debt and the associated fall in the euro (and a commensurate rise in the dollar). But I also think there was a flight-to-safety ahead of the 9/11 anniversary, especially among Wall Street traders given the terror threats and heavy security in NYC. While the markets had bigger worries than the little ISM reports, both headline numbers of the reports were above consensus expectations. The PMI for manufacturing was three tenths lower than last months number at 50.6%, but well above the consensus of 48.5 which was expecting a drop of almost 2 1/2 points. The issue is not what directors ignore. You cannot ignore something about which you are unaware.
The real issue is that most directors and investors are simply unaware of the many one-time items because they are buried deep in the annals of footnotes in annual reports or 10-K filings.
