Wall Street opened in the red on Wednesday as the US government officially shut down, igniting fears of a prolonged stoppage that could further strain an already fragile economy.

Typically, the new month begins with important manufacturing and construction reports, but this morning, the construction spending report for August became the first casualty of the government shutdown. 

While gold and silver have rightfully been in the spotlight lately, I want to briefly shift gears and highlight the opportunity in another underappreciated precious metal: palladium.
